Pre-Adoption FAQs

  • Can I love an adopted child like my "own"?

This is a very common question raised by prospective adoptive parents. Most families with both biological and adoptive children will tell you that they love their children equally regardless of how they joined their family.

  • What is the adoption process?
When you make the decision to adopt, you should start your home study. Once approved, you can pursue a domestic adoption privately or through a public or private agency. Most (but not all) prospective adoptive parents adopting internationally use licensed adoption agencies to locate their children. Once you have custody of your children, at least one post-adoption visit by a social worker is usually required.
  • I'm not married. Can I still adopt?
Singles can adopt from within the U.S. or from overseas. However, certain countries do not place children with singles.
  • Can gays and same-sex couples adopt?
Gay persons and same-sex couples may adopt in Maryland and in the District of Columbia, but usually not from overseas.
  • I have a criminal history. Can I still adopt?
Having a criminal record does not automatically preclude you from adopting unless you have been convicted of a violent crime, a crime involving child abuse or certain narcotics violations. If you have a criminal record, I would be happy to discuss your situation with you.
  • I have a medical issue. Can I adopt?
You can be considered if your physician will certify in writing that your medical issue will not interfere with your ability to parent.
  • I have an allegation of child neglect on my record. Can I still adopt?
Generally speaking, persons with histories of child neglect cannot be approved for an adoption. However, if there are extenuating circumstances your situation will be considered on a case-by-case basis
