Home Study FAQs

  • How long will it take to complete my home study?

Most families complete their home studies within two months. Your home study can be expedited if necessary (an additional fee will be charged).

  • If I have a criminal record, can I still be approved to adopt?

Having a criminal record does not automatically preclude you from adopting unless you have been convicted of a violent crime, a crime involving child abuse or certain narcotics violations. If you have a criminal record, I would be happy to discuss your situation with you.

  • If I have been in counseling or therapy, can I adopt?

You can be considered if your therapist will certify in writing that the reason you sought therapy will not interfere with your ability to parent.

  • I take medications for depression. Can I adopt?

You can be considered if your therapist will certify in writing that your treatment and the reasons for your treatment will not interfere with your ability to parent.

  • Will my health condition affect my ability to adopt?

You can be considered if your physician will certify in writing that your health condition will not interfere with your ability to parent.

  • I have children. Will they be involved in the home study?

Yes. Depending on your children's ages, I will have a brief chat with them to determine how they feel about having an adopted sibling.

  • We have a relative living with us. Will she be involved in our home study?

All residents of your home 18 years of age and older are required to provide certain documents and to obtain criminal background, medical and child protection clearances.

  • I have an allegation of child neglect on my record. Can I still adopt?

Your situation will be considered on a case-by-case basis if there are extenuating circumstances. Generally speaking, persons with histories of child neglect cannot be approved for an adoption.

  • Can gays/same-sex couples adopt?

Yes. Gay persons and same-sex couples may adopt in Maryland and in the District of Columbia but usually not from overseas.

  • How long is a home study valid?

Home studies for Maryland and District of Columbia residents are valid for one year. Home studies for Virginia residents are valid for 36 months. Your home study can be updated if you don't complete your adoption within the 12 or 36 month time period.

  • We want to adopt domestically, but haven't located a birthmother yet. When should we start our home study?

I recommend that you start your home study now so you will be ready to start your adoption processing when you do find a birthmother. Also, by being proactive, you will avoid paying a fee to expedite your home study.
