Understanding the Home Study Process

Once you apply to adopt a child domestically or internationally, you may be concerned about whether you will be "approved." However, armed with accurate information about what to expect, you can begin the "home study" experience with confidence and excitement at the prospect of welcoming a child into your family.

All adoptive applicants are required to participate in a "home study." This process involves gathering information about you and your family to assess your suitability to adopt. The home study also includes education and preparation about the adoption process, adoptive parenting and possibly about the child you desire to adopt.

Since 1995, I have assisted with more than 900 adoption home studies for residents of Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia who have adopted successfully from within the United States and from many countries. These families have adopted privately, independently or through placing agencies located throughout the U.S.

As an adoptive parent, I have personally experienced the home study process and am aware of the anxiety and concerns you may have as you begin your home study.

What this means for you is that your home study will be done sensitively, professionally and efficiently.

For families adopting internationally, I work under the auspices of several licensed adoption agencies to prepare home studies that are approved for Hague and non-Hague Convention countries.

Home Study Fees

The fee for home studies for residents of Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia is $1,500. Home study fees do not include post-adoption meetings or reports that may be required. If more than three meetings are required, additional fees may apply. There may be a nominal charge if additional documents are required for your adoption dossier.
